Easy Pain au Chocolat

Easy Pain au Chocolat

In a mad rush to pick out a book to read the other day on my way out of town, I grabbed a book named "How to Bake a Perfect Life" by Barbara O'Neal.  I actually enjoyed the book, the plot is fairly predictable but it has enough twists and turns that it kept it interesting enough.

The main character in the book owns a bakery, so reading the book made me want to bake!  And...there were RECIPES in the book!!  Oh yes.  Actual recipes.  I decided to start easy, very very easy.  I decided to try making Pain au Chocolat.

I kept is super simple and used frozen puff pastry and they did turn out yummy!

Easy Pain au Chocolat

Ingredients:

  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tsp water
  • approx 6-12oz bittersweet chocolate chips/chunks
  • sugar for dusting
Directions:
  1. Thaw pastry sheets according to directions on box
  2. Prepare two cookie sheets by lining with parchment or spraying with cooking spray
  3. Cut each pastry sheet into 12 squares
  4. Brush pastry with egg glaze
  5. Place several chocolate chips/chunks on each pastry rectangle
  6. Roll pastries up tightly and place seam down on the cookie sheets
  7. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 4+ hours (overnight is ok)
  8. Refrigerate remaining egg glaze
  9. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  10. Brush tops of pastries with egg glaze
  11. Dust lightly with sugar
  12. Bake for approx 15 minutes
  13. Let cool and enjoy!

They really are so simple to make, and aren't they just so pretty too?!

Pastry and chocolate...you just can't go wrong!  Yum!
